Almond Blossom in Mallorca
Every year the almond blossom in Mallorca attracts countless visitors. Majorcan almonds are considered the best in the world and the almond blossom is a major attraction for visitors to the island in winter. Around five million almond trees grow on Mallorca. From the end of January to around mid-March, the landscape of Mallorca is transformed into a delicately fragrant sea of flowers. Many areas of the island show the fascinating natural spectacle in soft pink and brilliant white.
The time of the almond blossom on Mallorca is an incomparably beautiful natural phenomenon and offers wonderful views and photo motives for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists. Except in the north, where the almond blossom is quite rare, almond trees can be found almost everywhere in the heartland of Mallorca.
In the 10th century the Moors brought the almond tree to Mallorca from the Orient. But almonds have only been cultivated on a large scale in Mallorca since the 19th century. The reason was a phylloxera plague that destroyed most of the island's vineyards, so that many farmers switched to almond cultivation. Thus Mallorca was one of the largest almond growing areas in the world until the middle of the 20th century and the landscape of the Balearic Island is still characterised by this. Today, commercial almond cultivation is declining due to falling prices, so that more and more almond groves are becoming overgrown, but this does not make the numerous almond trees less attractive for tourists.
In the town of Son Servera, in the east of the island, during the almond blossoming period in Mallorca, you can visit an almond fair that coincides with the blossoming of the almond trees. The Fira de la flor d'ametler is held in February on the grounds of Ses Cases de Ca s'Hereu, an 18th century finca in the village of Son Servera.
This almond blossom fair has a large number of stalls selling different products made from almonds, almond wood and the blossom itself. You can see the equipment used to harvest and prepare almonds and enjoy traditional music. This year the fair will take place on 02 February from 9:30 h to 14:30 h.
