But Mallorca is more than just parties and postcard idylls. The island has a long tradition of craftsmanship, agriculture and - yes - winegrowing. Owning a vineyard on Mallorca means not only becoming part of this fascinating tradition, but also enjoying life at its best.

Viticulture with concept and know-how
Anyone who thinks about having their own winery on Mallorca is quickly dismissed as a dreamer. Looking out over the vast property from the terrace of your finca, harvesting your own grapes, bottling your own wine and even labelling the bottles yourself. What a romantic idea. A hobby for enthusiasts? No. Not at all.
More and more people are discovering Mallorcan viticulture not just as a pleasure, but as a lifestyle. With the right management - whether by your own hand or with an experienced winemaker - your own vineyard with bodega and thus the wine sales can certainly cover the running costs of the finca. While the value of the property increases over the years, the owner not only enjoys the charm and uniqueness of Mallorcan country life, but also added value that goes far beyond the enjoyment of a good glass of wine. Having your own winery on Mallorca is more than just a property - it's a way of life.
Of course, not everyone who buys a winery on Mallorca has the ambition to become a winemaker. But - why not? You don't have to become a winemaker yourself - you can and may well hand over the work by placing your vines in the hands of experienced Mallorcan winemakers. They often not only take care of the vines, but also look after the entire vineyard. But you can bet that pure landowners quickly become committed winegrowers. That the initial interest is quickly overtaken by a fascination for their own wine? Many bodegas market their wines with great success to restaurants, hotels or private collectors; numerous wineries are open to the public and offer wine tastings and guided tours for visitors.
Whether as a passionate hobby winemaker or with professional management by experienced experts - having your own winery on Mallorca is more than just a property.

Ideal growing conditions - fields instead of mountains
The island combines ideal conditions for winegrowing: the fertile soil and Mediterranean climate offer perfect conditions for winegrowing. The hot summers, mild winters and regular breezes from the sea provide natural cooling. The calcareous, well-aerated soils with mineral components give the wines a special flavour and the low altitude protects against extreme temperature fluctuations.
If you take a look around the island, you will quickly realise that the classic ‘vineyard’ is missing. Instead, vineyards characterise the landscape. The low slopes, combined with permeable soils and well thought-out irrigation, ensure healthy, resilient vines.
Mallorca has an exciting mix of autochthonous (local) and international grape varieties, including
Manto Negro - probably Mallorca's most typical red wine grape, usually soft, fruity and slightly spicy.
Callet is an autochthonous variety with a fine structure that is often combined with other grapes.
Prensal Blanc (Moll) is the most important white grape variety on the island, fresh and light.
However, international classics such as Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay also produce excellent results and are often added to achieve more complexity.
Wine growing in Mallorca
How does wine work in Mallorca?
Wine growing on Mallorca is not only an economic sector, but also a deeply rooted cultural heritage. Throughout the year, the work in the vineyards requires patience, care and experience - from careful pruning in winter to caring for the plants in spring and the strenuous harvest in late summer and autumn. But when the last grapes have been harvested, the time of celebration begins: the island honours its wine tradition with atmospheric wine festivals where locals and visitors alike welcome the new vintage.
The Vermar festival in Binissalem, the heart of Mallorcan wine culture, is particularly well known. Every September, the village is transformed into one big party: Winegrowers present their best wines, there are traditional dances, music and culinary specialities - and of course the famous annual ‘grape fight’ takes place, in which participants throw grapes at each other. Wine festivals are also celebrated in other wine-growing areas of the island such as Santa Maria del Camí or Felanitx. In addition to wine tastings, the programme here often includes parades, music and craft markets.
Mallorca's wine festivals once again impressively demonstrate how deeply rooted the island's wine tradition is - a combination of hard work, passion and pure joie de vivre.
Protected Designations of Origin - D.O. Wines in Mallorca
What does the D.O. on the wine bottle mean?
Mallorca has two official D.O. regions (Denominación de Origen), which stand for the highest quality: One is the D.O. Binissalem, the heart of Mallorcan viticulture, is characterised by limestone and clay soils. The wines are often full-bodied, but with a Mediterranean lightness. And on the other hand D.O. Pla i Llevant. This is the wine region in the east of the island, known for its elegant and aromatic wines.
