But is a penthouse really the best choice when buying an apartment in Mallorca?

Yes, a penthouse generally offers the best privacy, no noise pollution from above and the best views.
But are the often elaborately designed roof terraces with pool, jacuzzi and summer kitchen actually used? In our experience, this is very often not the case. It is usually far too hot in Mallorca to really use a roof terrace on a regular basis.
However, many owners of top-floor flats report that it is simply too impractical for them to take drinks and food up to the terrace and then back down to the kitchen after a cosy evening. 

What are the alternatives to a penthouse in Mallorca?

If you are looking for a flat with large outdoor areas on Mallorca, then garden flats are the best alternative to a penthouse. Terraces and gardens in ground floor flats are usually on the same level as the living area. Life on Mallorca takes place outdoors for most of the year. 
What could be more convenient than being on just one level? If you don't want to worry about garden maintenance, there is a solution for this too. Some apartment complexes in the south-west of Mallorca offer garden flats where the entire garden maintenance is taken care of by the owners' association.
